Gave My Back Porch A Face-Lift

You may remember, about 2 years ago I did an overhaul on our pool house porch in the Hot Springs Heritage House, (if not you can check it out here!) At he Hot Springs house we had rotting wood in an area of our back yard that really needed to be replaced, very similar thing happened here in the Alabama house; a spot right off the back porch had rotten wood that need to be replaced. And ultimately is what inspired this whole post. A few months ago I started buying pieces here and there, with the intention of making our back porch look nicer and more inviting.

A few weeks ago Stephen ripped out the rotten wood and we put down sod, (watch here) and then I knew it was time to turn my attention to the porch! I will be using the same key points that I used in my article from 2 years ago, because they're fail proof!

The Before. There's absolutely nothing wrong with this space, it's just kinda plain. We've had this table & chair set going on 3 years now. And if you read my ppst on our pool house porch makeover, then this rug may look familiar, that's because I bought it specifically for that project; same with the pillows.

Create A Mood Board. Anytime I want to update, change, or rearrange a space, i will always, always, always, create a mood board! I'm a visual person so it's normally on Pinterest, but regardless, I still have to have a place to gather everything that inspires me. Pinterest is a great place to get ideas on just about everything!! 😆

Furniture. When choosing your outdoor furniture, try to keep in mind that you're probably going to have that piece or pieces for the next few years. From personal experience, a few years ago, we bought some patio furniture and it was full of bright colors. Then guess what happened? The sun bleached out the color, and made it look super old, FAST! So with that learning experience, I know that I will never invest in colorful furniture! Like I mentioned earlier, we've had this set for about 3 years now, and since I chose neutral colors, all we have to do is swap out the lesser expensive items. And that's where you'll save the most.

Pop Of Color. Picking up from the above statement, if I ever want to add color to a space, I now know to add color by using pillows or other decorative items. That way if the sun fades them, I'm only out a few bucks, and not a few hundred bucks!!🤑 This time, I brought in the pop of color by adding loads of colorful flowers around the porch railing! I got this idea from a gardening video on YouTube! I bought 6 of these pretty hanging baskets from Lowes and filled them with the flowers. I tried to keep it as budget friendly as possible, so I broke apart the flowers to stretch what I had. I really wish I had bought more baskets and flowers to be honest. This is my favorite part of the whole project!

Greenery. Continuing from the above statement, one of my most favorite things to incorporate in any space is flowers and plants!! I knew I wanted to add some type of plant in a cute planter. I found this Peace Lily and thought it would be a nice addition. After reading the tag and learning that they require low sun, I knew it would be perfect for our coverd porch. Now I'm not good with plants, so here's to hoping I can keep it alive! This one didn't come in a nice pot so I found one that I really liked and snagged it up real quick! I filled the planter with more soil and that part was complete.

Rugs. By adding an outdoor rug, it really pulls the space together to create that outdoor "Livingroom" feel. It also adds texture and contrast which creates a welcoming environment. I could have very easily kept the other one, but I wanted something with a fresher look. I went with a round rug this time, and one with a little more detail. This particular pattern goes really well with the rest of the house. Just about all of the light fixtures and even the braces under our bar top, have the swirly bits on them, so that was another deciding factor. Also this one is made of a different type of material than the old one, making it easier to clean up messes... because you know... kids and dogs!😅

Decorate: unlike the Hot Springs house where the pool house had cedar exterior; this house is brick, making it very difficult to hang anything on the walls. And since I'm not a brick expert I decided it would be best if I didn't mess anything up by trying to hang something!😅 So I kept the decorating very simple by pulling things from around the property that I already had, and gave them a new home. Except the plant, she's new!

That's it for today, I hope I have inspired you to get outside and create your own beautiful living space!
