🏡 One Year House Update
I CANNOT believe that we've already been here for one year!... Time has literally just flown by so fast! I know I've mentioned this before, but for the new comers, every time we relocate I like to put together a 1 year house update where I share all the projects that we've done over the time span of a year. And as of May 25th, 2022, we've been in the Alabama home for one whole year!😃
To be completely honest, we've only done a handful of projects since we first bought this house. I think after being in the Hot Springs Heritage House and doing so many upgrades over a 2 year period, we were looking for a break from projects!!
I'm going to try to go in order from first project and work my way to the latest project. And the first one was setting up my garden beds! I started with 2 then slowly added more. I ended up with 6 on the back fence, but after a few months of not really growing much of anything, I realized that I jumped the gun, and that specific area doesn't get enough sun during the day...😭 So literally the only thing that grew over there was okra and 2 carrots. So I did end up pulling those beds up, with intentions of relocating them to the other side of the yard!
Before we bought the house I knew that I needed to get rid of the awful wire shelves in my closet!😅 So as soon as we moved in I started buying the pieces needed to build a custom closet system. Those things are pretty expensive so over a few months I would buy a piece or 2 here and there, until I had all the pieces. I had full intentions of giving the walls a new coat of paint but that still hasn't happened yet..🙈🙉🙊 Other than that, I am very pleased with how it turned out!!
Going back outside now... and I didn't get a true before pic because Stephen started working before I got a chance to get out there...🙄 BUUUTT There used to be a small fenced in area that wasn't being used for anything, so we took the fencing down and cleaned up said area. And this is where I started putting more raised garden beds!! I actually covered a lot of this part in a couple YouTube videos, you can watch those here and here! But I could not be more happy about how well this turned out!😍 I went with thick stone pavers for the walking path instead of rocks. First because we have kids, dogs, and a pool... enough said!😅 And secondly, because that area of the yard doesn't drain very well after it rains. The thick stones keep me from sliding in mud basically!! I think in the 6 month house update I had started putting my arbor together, but didn't have it finished... well she's done now, and she creates a beautiful garden entry!!
When we first moved in, there was this cabinet over on the right side of the livingroom. It took up way to much space, so we had to change that pretty quick. It was actually attached to the wall, so when we pulled it out that was bare sheet-rock exposed. Stephen found the exact paint in the garage from the previous homeowners, and painted the wall. Then he made a trip to Lowes to get a matching baseboard. He did such a good job that you can't even tell that the cabinet was even there!👏🏻
I know I had mentioned adding black touches to the front of the house, but so far I've only gotten around to painting the front door. Stephen was nice enough to snap a few pics during commercials on a game he was watching! The numbers 101 were black so I spray painted them gold. I checked into getting a new black frame glass door, but those were pretty expensive. So then I thought about spray painting the white frame, black... but then I thought that would make a huge mess, so I ended up just leaving it white!😅 I did notice however, that when coming down our road, it didn't look completely awful because of the 2 windows beside it. The trim is white, and the windows look dark from the road. So it all worked out!!
Another thing that needed attention was the carpet from the bottom of the stairs all the way throughout the whole upstairs 🙄 but... the stairs had been so worn that they started getting holes on the tread. So Stephen ripped out the old, and we had professionals (yes we know our limits on home DIY projects!!😅) come in and install new!😍 I think we did a pretty good job at picking a color that was similar to the upstairs, because WOW... it blended so well, and really helped that staircase look tons better!
And our latest project was ripping out the old rotten wood that was an extention of our back porch. This is something that should have been done first! After removing the wood, we toyed around with doing some type of landscaping stuff with plants and mulch. But we ended up putting down sod, which we had never done before! Yall!!! It totally changed the whole look!! It broke up the gray concrete from around the pool and the gray wood from the porch! I'm now a believer of sod!!😂
Thanks so much for being here, I really hope you enjoyed today's post! Also be extra safe this Memorial Day weekend!🇺🇲 I hope to see you back here next Friday!!
