6 Month Home Update
How have we already lived here for 6 months?!!😵 Hey y'all, what's up? Today is a well overdue house update. We moved into this 1979 brick home roughly 6 months ago. As soon as we signed papers and got our keys, we hit the ground running!! There was so much to be done, that it was a little overwhelming and slightly daunting if you thought on it for too long.
We have done so much over the past 6 month, but there's still a ton left. With the holidays behind us, I think we will be able to refocus our attention back on the house.
It truly amazes me just how much a coat of paint can change the whole look and feel of a space. When we moved in, there was wall paper in almost every room alongside brown trim (painted, not natural). There was so much to do and I wasn't real sure where to start. The first thing to be changed was the small kitchen island. I love a good island, as long as it doesn't make the space feel cramped, and this one did. My father inlaw helped me relocate it into our laundry room, and is now serving as a folding table. (Nothing else has been done to the laundry room).
We just recently started to turn attention to the kitchen, mainly because I started tearing out a bulkhead while Stephen was at work. Basically leaving no other option, but to move forward with this project. Our plans are to replace the light fixture above the sink and remove the upper cabinets that's over the peninsula opening up the kitchen. In the future we want to get new countertops and a tile backsplash. Our cabinets will stay; they are solid wood and in great shape!
The livingroom is about 75% complete. I have painted the walls and trim in the room TWICE, simply because I didn't like the first gray color that I put on the wall. It pulled a baby blue color, which was not what i wanted. I have removed the valances and replaced them with newer window treatments and new white faux wood blinds. Stephen took down the mantle over the fireplace, but that's it. I can't decide if I want to paint it, or maybe hang some shiplap to tone down the brick a little. I'm thinking we may have to call in a professional to do a few things, only because we don't have the tools needed to work with brick.
Overflowing from the livingroom is the staircase. I have painted the banister, chair rail, and the spindles white. The stairs lead to the loft area and the girls' room, but we haven't touched a thing upstairs. Both of my girls are kinda upset that their rooms haven't been painted yet!!😆 We do want to redo the actual stairs in the future.
After painting the livingroom, I went to the dinning room. I pulled down wall paper, painted the walls and trim, changed out the wall sconces and the chandelier. There were these spindle things on both sides of the entryway from the kitchen, so Stephen knocked those out. I sanded down the area around that, and painted it. We would LOVE to remove the 2 pony walls, but the tile floor doesn't go under them so, we have to let them be for the time being. Oh, and we removed the french doors!

Moving from the dining room, I went ahead and painted the hallway of doors, that quite literally had fuzzy wall paper...😆😩 The hallway was so dark and grimy looking beforehand, and to be honest, its still pretty dark. However, its not near as dark as it was. We again, stripped wall paper, and painted the walls, doors, trim, and wainscoting. We replaced the sconces to match the ones in the dining room. Phase 2 will consist of adding another sconce and adding some recessed lighting on the ceiling to help brighten it more. Also, there was a door in that doorway, that we removed. That doorway will eventually be taken out as well, but at the moment it's still there. (I don't even understand why it's there in the first place...🙄....)
We have two formal entryways. The back is actually way nicer than the front. I have stripped wall paper and painted both areas. We still are wanting to change out the light fixtures, but we can't agree on what we want. So we haven't bought anything yet.
For some unknown reason I guess I didn't take a true before picture of the front entrance. This is after I had already painted the walls and trim. However, this is the door before I painted it white, and then black! Lol it actually looks black in the first pic, but it's a dark plummy purple color that's trimmed out in brown. I thought the white would make it brighter in this small space, but after I painted the back entry black, it only made since to paint the front entry black as well.
In the front entryway, there is a closet that, in my opinion, is a waste of space...🤦🏼♀️... it makes the space feel extremely cramped. I hate the style of these bi-fold doors and I want to replace them. I would actually love to take out the entire closet, but theres an AC return on the left side, making it more difficult. I did go ahead and paint the doors that way it's not a complete eyesore.
There are still several rooms and spaces that are halfway finished and some that haven't even been touched. Like I said earlier, we've done a lot, but there's still a lot more to go.
Right now our focus is on the main common areas. Next, we will start to focus on personal spaces like bedrooms and bathrooms. Which will all fall into phase 1, hitting just the surfaces. Phase 2 will consist of more "renovation" type stuff. Phase 3 will be the last phase, which will be flooring for the downstairs area. Upstairs has laminate wood flooring, so we figured leaving that alone will cut down on cost for the first level. 4,500 sqft of new flooring will hit well over $10k and that's using the less expensive material.
I have a YouTube video on what we did with the pool area. You can go check that out here if you wanna see that process from the beginning! Also, I have started a home account on Instagram for those who want to keep up with the transformation of our home. I hope yall enjoyed seeing what we've done so far!
