Kitchen Renovation / Before & After

Oh man, where to start with this one?... When we bought this house in June 2019, we KNEW exactly what we were getting. We knew that this place would need a TON of tlc... and not because it was rundown or decrepit in any way, but because πŸ‘πŸ» IT πŸ‘πŸ» WAS πŸ‘πŸ» UGLY!!! The house was built in the 70's and you could tell that some of the previous owners tried to do some updates here or there, but we went in and COMPLETELY flipped it!! Like, everything but the kitchen sink!

From our personal experience, we knew better than to just go in and start a whole lot of projects at once. We had to keep reminding ourselves, "one room at a time". We also knew that the kitchen would undoubtedly be the biggest and most expensive of them all. After living here for roughly 6 months, I'd had enough of the dark & ugly... & the butterflies on the wall....πŸ‘€... YEAH, there was butterfly wallpaper in the kitchen and the eat-in kitchen....  (i took really bad before pics... sorry...)

One day while Stephen was at work, I grabbed a hammer and I just started tearing stuff down! Actually it started by me wanting to get rid of the wallpaper, then I realized that I could just take down the bulkhead and not have to worry about scraping wallpaper! Work smarter not harder right?!!🀷🏼‍♀️ Made sense to me. There was this decorative piece that went around the top of the cabinets, we call it a spice rack... I'm not sure the technical name?... So I pulled down all of the trim, the spice rack, and the ply-wood that made up the "bulkhead".

I tried not to tear up too much stuff, for in case I had to put it back for some reason. (Sometimes bulkheads are there for a reason, like hiding duct work, electrical,.... etc...) Fortunately for us, it was purely a design feature that the original homeowner chose. I was able to knock out the 2x4s and then pull down the framing from the ceiling. I only had to patch like 2 holes, so not too bad on my part!!

Stephen was able to removed the lighting over the sink by cutting the power and capping the wires. He also manned the cabinets and microwave over the peninsula. That one was tough...  but taking that out was so worth it!! At that point I was kicking myself for not starting this project sooner. As soon as it was gone, the room was instantly brighter! I sanded the tops of the cabinets, applied a fresh coat.. or 2... of white paint, and added new matte black pulls. I also removed the backsplash and a wooden box that was concealing an outlet and a phone jack. I sanded down where the backsplash was, and painted it the same color gray as in the eat-in kitchen. (Valspar Requisite Gray).

This was a stopping point for a couple months, but this was easier to live with than the former...  In May we called in the professionals to have some new recessed lighting put in, along with the light fixture over the sink. Annndddd.... taking down the ceiling fan!!

I guess i didn't take pics from us removing the peninsula... However, once we decided that we were definitely going to be having new flooring installed, we decided to move forward with removing that as well. Once that was gone, we relocated the refrigerator to the right side, over by the window, put the stove where the fridge was, AND brought the island back!! Lol lots of moving around!!

From here we were in talks with our contractor guy and our granite guy to have some custom cabinetry work done, and to have new countertops installed! Our cabinet guy built onto our existing cabinets, making them seamless. He built a cabinet over the refrigerator and extended the bottom cabinets to fill in where the peninsula was.

After adding the molding around the top of the cabinets, having the new granite countertops installed and new cabinet doors put on, our kitchen was officially completed! 😍 Stephen was scared when I told him my vision, but he trusted me & my choices, and it all worked out perfectly.  Now we get to enjoy this beautiful space that I designed, and I could not be more pleased with this renovation!!

I know today was a long one, but I'm so glad that I have all of this in one place so that I can clean out my phone!!!πŸ˜… With all of that said, I hope yall have a fabulous weekend!!
